The Royal Marines Association City of London Branch once again proudly took part in the annual Armed Forces Day Flag Raising Ceremony on Tuesday, 24 June 2025, held in the historic surrounds of Guildhall Yard.
A strong turnout from the branch saw 20 members in attendance, many proudly wearing their green lids. As ever, it was a privilege to be invited to this prestigious event, which draws in veterans and serving personnel from across the Square Mile and beyond. This year, the honour of raising the Armed Forces Day flag fell to the Royal Air Force.
The RAF band did a fine job in leading the ceremonial proceedings, adding to the dignity and pride of the occasion.
With temperatures pushing into the high 20s, it was another scorcher in Guildhall Yard. While the blazing sun tested everyone’s mettle, occasional cloud cover and a welcome breeze gave brief respite from what was otherwise a redders afternoon. Still, spirits remained high throughout the ceremony, reflecting the camaraderie and pride that defines the Armed Forces community.
The RMA City of London was well represented not just in numbers, but also in presence. The branch standard was carried with pride by Lou Sourtel, while Mike Russell carried the Canterbury standard — a strong showing of Corps colours in the heart of the City.
Following the formal proceedings, all attendees were welcomed into the Guildhall for a top-drawer reception hosted by the City of London. The spread laid on was, as always, outstanding, and our members made the most of the opportunity to share a wet and enjoy the scran alongside fellow veterans and civi guests. There was a great atmosphere throughout, with plenty of catching up, banter, and mutual respect on display.
In classic bootneck fashion, the RMA City of London were the first ones into the Guildhall and the last ones to leave. Not quite ready to hang up the day, a group of members then headed to a nearby establishment to continue the run ashore with a few more wets before heading home.
This event remains a highlight in the City’s calendar and one that the branch is proud to attend each year. Our representation continues to grow, and it's a reminder of the strength and presence of the Corps family in the heart of London. We're fortunate to be part of it.
